Facebook's secret program removed 8.7 million pornographic images of children within 3 months

Facebook said it had removed 8.7 million images of child nudity from its platform in the past three months to combat child exploitation.

Facebook said it had used new technology for the first time on artificial intelligence and automated learning technology in its efforts to avoid child exploitation and promoted its ban on images showing minors in a sexual context.

In an official announcement, the head of Facebook's global safety department, Antigon Davis, said 99 percent of those images had been removed before anyone reported violating the company's ban on child exploitation.

She said Facebook had removed accounts that paid child pornography and had taken a step on non-sexual content, such as what appears to be normal pictures of children in the bathroom, to avoid abuse.

Davis said Facebook has been working hard to develop new technology since past years to combat child exploitation and keep children safe on the podium.

"In addition to image matching technology, we use artificial intelligence and automated learning to proactively detect images of child nudity in pornography and the contents of child exploitation when it is downloaded," she said.

In recent months, Facebook has been under increasing pressure from federal regulators and lawmakers to maintain a platform free of content on hatred, extremism and other illicit materials.
